Exit the International airport staying in the right lane. You will loop around to the west going in the opposite direction than downtown San Jose. Stay on the main road, the CI 1, Pan American Hwy, past San Ramon and Esparza. Drive past the town of Esparza. There is a sign on the main highway that reads "Puntarenas RT 23" (approx 66 miles according to the B&B MAP of Costa Rica, exit to the right and follow the signs to downtown Puntarenas, via Rt 17. Follow the signs to the ferry at the far end of town. Wait in your car until a uniformed Tambor employee issues you a paper coupon. Once you have the coupon you may go to the ticket office and buy your ticket to Paquera. Once you exit the ferry in Paquera continue straight, passing thru the towns of Tambor and Cobano (approx 1 hour). Leaving Cobano the asphalt turns into a dirt road over a small bridge for 14 kms until you reach the intersection for Mal Pais/Santa Teresa. Turn right at the main intersection in Mal Pais, with a 2 story blue commercial building on the corner, on your right. Continue approximately 3 km. As soon as you pass the Supermarket " La Hacienda" on the right side, slow down and look to your left. In about 100 yards you will see a green chain-link fence, and a wooden gate with "CASAS PURA VIDA" in tiled letters on the left hand side. SAFE TRAVELS !!!

DIRECTIONS TO CABINA LOS TUCANES FROM SAN JOSE:
Exit the Juan Santa Maria international airport in San Jose heading north-away fromSJ- on the interamericana-main hwy also called Rt3-towards San Ramon and Puntarenas. Proceed past the signs for Grecia, Sarchi, and Palmares. Approx. 1 hour-60km- from the intn´l airport you will see your 1st Mall on the right side in San Ramon & a sign for the arenal volcano. Exit right & proceed thru several stop signs to the end of town where you will turn left and immediately right at the 1st light. Follow signs to the volcano-Tabacon Resort-bearing left at the next fork-with a church in front- onto unmarked Rt 142. Travel approx. 40 km or about 1.5 hours over well paved winding mt. roads. You will arrive at a fork in the road that is identifiable by the small volantary toll booth, 'piaje voluntario',bear left and continue over the Penas Blancas bridge another half an hour to Fortuna. When you pass the Rio Fortuna you are approx. 1km from town. There are two other small rivers the Rio Habana and the Rio Burio, on the way. The Rio Burio is the entrance to Fortuna. You will see the Super Christain grocery on the left and the MegaSuper on the right. Turn right immediately after the bridge and take your first left at the Megasuper. At the first stop turn left and park, on that block. 'Jacamar' tour agency and Lava Rocks restaurant is on the left hand side immediately across form the town church and there on the second floor are the keys with Yesenia. If you get lost or need help please contact her directly at 8843-5099. Please keep in mind that you will be driving over the continental divide thru the cloud forest outside of San Ramon. Therefore, I recommend that you plan on arriving by dark, 530-6pm. Plan on a 3- 3.5 hour drive from San Jose. Safe Travels.
