Curu National Wildlife Refuge is home to a great variety of marine and terrestrial flora & fauna, including over 230 species of birds. A new species Platymiscium curuense was discovered in it's semi-deciduous forest in the 1990's. The terrain consists of deciduous forest, swamp, mangrove, and beautiful tranquil beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Furthermore the Famous Tortuga Islands, rated as one of the top 5 most beautiful beaches in Latin America (E-Entertainment) are located just offshore, a 10-15 minute boat ride away. Snorkeling gear is also available for rent from along with your boat tour. There is a wide variety of foot paths to choose from over varied terrain. You may also visit the spider monkey rescue center where the local captives will surely put on a great show or learn more about the Lapa Roja (Scarlet Macaw) research and reintroduction project. There is a small gift shop & restaurant.
