Arenal Volcano is a must see for on any Costa Rican vacation. This stratovolcano, has an almost perfect 1,633 meter high cone and is continually active. The very viscous lava provides explosive eruptions which give off gases, ash and incandescent rocks, a truly amazing sight to behold, especially at night. In addition, the Arenal Conservation area which includes the Arenal National Park and the Tenorio Volcano National Park is home to over 3,450 species of flora & 2,450 species of animals in some of the most gorgeous moist and very moist perenial forests in the country. The great curassow (Crax rubra) paca (Agouti paca) Baird's tapir (Tapirus bairdii), giant anteater (Mymecophaga tridactyla), peccary (Tayassu paecari), howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) an deven the jaguar (Panthera onca) may be spotted with the help of experienced guide. Also note worthy is the fact that the Arenal hydroelectric complex which creates lake Arenal, the largest fresh water lake in the country, generates over 40% of all of the electricity consumed in the country. There is also a wind power project at the Western end of the lake near Tejona. The basin of the Arenal Reservoir, commonly referred to as Lake Arenal, was included on the Ramsar List of Wetland of International Importance in 2000. Last but not least this area is know for its geothermal abundance, most commonly enjoyed in the form of a nice soak in one of the many natural hot springs at the end of a busy day of sight seeing or adventure activities.
